What is Authentication?

Authentication is the process of verifying the identity of a user on a network or device. Network authentication is the verification of a user’s identity on a Wi-Fi network. The authentication process is the first thing a user encounters when attempting to connect to a network. The user is required to provide credentials before being able to access the network. These credentials can be a username and password, a WPA key, a MAC address, or some other information. The authentication process ensures that only authorized users can access the network.


Wifi Authentication Protocols

The following wifi authentication protocols are commonly used. - WEP - This is the oldest wifi authentication protocol available and should not be used. WEP is a weak form of authentication that was used when wifi first came out. It can be easily hacked and should not be used. - WPA - The WPA protocol is used by most businesses and organizations. It is a combination of the TKIP and AES encryption protocols. WPA is an improved version of WEP and should be used over WEP. - WPA2 - WPA2 is the most secure wifi authentication protocol. It uses AES encryption which is unbreakable. WPA2 is the wifi authentication protocol used by the Federal Government. WPA2 is recommended for businesses and organizations.

WPA Authentication

WPA authentication is the most popular form of authentication on wifi networks. WPA authentication uses the Pre-Shared Key (PSK) authentication method. This authentication method uses a password or passphrase that is between 8 and 63 characters in length. This password is used by the device attempting to connect to the network and the network’s router or access point. The passphrase is used together with the WPA algorithm to create a unique encryption key that is used to secure the network. The encryption key is used to identify users attempting to access the network and block those who do not have the password.

WPA2 Authentication

WPA2 authentication is the most secure form of authentication used on wifi networks. WPA2 authentication uses the RADIUS authentication method. This authentication method uses an authentication server to authenticate a user attempting to connect to the network. WPA2 requires an authentication server such as Cisco, Microsoft, or other servers where user logins are stored. When a device attempts to connect to the network, the network’s router or access point sends the user logins to the authentication server. The server responds with a “yes” or “no” response. If the server responds “yes”, the device is permitted to connect to the network. If the server responds “no”, the device is denied access to the network.

Radius Based Authentications

Radius-based authentications are used as radius servers. The radius servers are used to authenticate users who are attempting to connect to the network. This authentication method is useful when there are a large number of users attempting to connect to the network. This authentication method has high scalability and is able to accommodate a large number of users.
